Hey Troop Leaders! We’d like to take a moment to thank you
for helping girls today become leaders of tomorrow. After a long summer, the
new Girl Scout Membership Year officially started on October 1st.
This means all whole new year of projects, activities, and possibilities lie
ahead! Whether your troop has new or seasoned members, here are some ways to
get the ball rolling and the girls feeling ready to go. Don’t forget to <a href="http://www.girlscoutsccc.org/en/about-girl-scouts/Renew.html">renew</a>
your Girl Scout membership if you have not already!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Even if your troop has primarily returning members, there
may be some first day jitters that you and girls experience. Ease everyone into
the new year with some of these tips! <o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Set
the Tone – The first meeting will set the rest of the year up for success, so
make everyone feel welcome! Establish a connection by calling each girl by
name, acknowledging their questions, and sharing your own experiences.</li>
<li>Have
Some Fun – Use a game or activity to get things in motion. Try out one of the
icebreakers below to get the girls interacting with you and one another.</li>
<li>Mix
it Up – Cliques aren’t fun for anyone! Encourage girls to make new friends in
the troop by assigning rotating buddies or pulling names out of a hat for group
work.</li>
<li>Ask
the Girls – Check what the troop’s goals for the year are and create a game
plan. Whether it be a trip they want to take or what type of community service
project to do, girl involvement is the key to success. For activity and

<ul>
<li>Wipe That Smile Off Your Face </li>
<ul>
<li>Have the girls sit in a circle and pick one
person to start the game.</li>
<li>That person will smile their wildest, biggest,
silliest smile at everyone else in the circle (while staying silent), trying to
make them laugh.</li>
<li> For every girl in the circle who laughs at their
smile, they get one point.</li>
<li>After smiling at everyone in the group, they
‘wipe’ the smile off their face with their hand and ‘pass’ the smile to the
next girl in the circle.</li>
</ul>
<li>Two Truths and a Lie </li>
<ul>
<li>Have the girls sit in a circle and write down three statements about themselves. Two statements will be true and one will be false. </li>
<li>Take turns having each girl present their statements, and vote on which statement the rest of the group thinks is false. </li>
</ul>
<li>Mix and Meet (The M&Ms Game) </li>
<ul>
<li>Take a bag of M&Ms and tell everyone to grab a handful. </li>
<li>Assign a different category to each color, such as blue = family, green = school, yellow = friends, red = pets, and so on. </li>
<li>However many M&Ms a girl has in her hand is the number of facts they have to share about themselves. </li>
</ul>
<li>Toss the String </li>
<ul>
<li>Have the girls form a circle, and one girl will start with a ball of yarn. Holding on to the end of the string, she will call out another girl's name and toss the yarn to her. </li>
<li>The girl who catches the ball will call out someone else's name and toss the ball to her while holding on to part of the string. </li>
<li>After creating a spider web with the string, ask one girl to pull on the string while everyone else holds on. How many girls can feel the tug? This is a great way to talk to your troop about the importance of group cooperation and an individual's contribution to the whole team.</li>

<br />
As Girl Scouts, we are dedicated to building girls of
courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. October
is National Bullying Prevention Month, which brings communities together across
the nation to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Studies show
that <a href="https://www.stopbullying.gov/media/facts/index.html">1 in 4 U.S.
students</a> have been bullied at school, and 71% of young people say they have
seen bullying in their schools. So how do you know when someone is being
bullied, and how do you stop it?<br />
<br />
<h4>
<span style="color: #cc0000;">What We Know</span><span style="color: purple;"> </span></h4>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Bullying is defined by the Center for Disease Control and
Department of Education as “unwanted aggressive behavior; observed or perceived
power imbalance; and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition.”
These types of behaviors can happen in any number of places, contexts, or
locations, including at school or even online. Electronic bullying, or
cyberbullying, typically occurs using phones, email, instant messaging, and
online posts. Types of bullying can include:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Name calling </li>
<li>Teasing </li>
<li>Spreading rumors or lies </li>
<li>Pushing, hitting, or kicking </li>
<li>Leaving out </li>
<li>Threatening </li>
<li>Stealing belongings </li>
</ul>
<o:p></o:p><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Bullying affects everyone, including those who are bullied,
those who bully others, and those who see bullying going on. Individuals that
are bullied are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, increased
feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and
decreased academic achievement and school participation. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<h4>
<span style="color: #cc0000;">What We Can Do</span></h4>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s easy to see that bullying does harm to everyone
involved. So now that we know what bullying looks like, what exactly can we do
to stop it?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<ol>
<li> Speak
up! Although it might feel uncomfortable to intervene, saying something as
simple as “this isn’t cool or funny,” or “stop treating her like that,” to a
bully is often enough to stop them in their tracks. If speaking up seems too
hard or not safe, you can opt to laugh it off or simply walk away.</li>
<li>Be a friend. It
is important to support whoever is being bullied by letting them know you don’t
agree with what is being said, and that you will help to keep it from happening
again. Act as a positive role model for others by treating everyone with
kindness and respect.</li>
<li>Tell an adult. Sometimes
walking away or avoiding a bully isn’t enough, and it is important that an
authority figure is aware of the situation to keep it from happening again.</li>
<li>Take action. Talk
to your teacher or principal about getting involved at school. Start a safety
committee, make posters about bullying, plan an informational skit, or discuss
customizing your school’s anti-bullying policy.</li>
</ol>
Remember, bullying is no one’s
fault but the bully. No one ever deserves to be mistreated, and as Girl Scouts
we know the importance of respecting ourselves and others. Always stop and
think before you say or do something that could hurt someone, whether that be
at home, in school, or online. After all, our differences are what makes us all
special!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Practice creating a community of respect this Friday, October 5, for National Do Something Nice Day. Whether that mean including someone by inviting them to eat lunch with you or making a new friend in class, every action you take can build a more positive environment for yourself and the world around you.<br />

We’re excited to announce the first phase of the vision to
transform the Castroville office to the <i>Andrew & Phyllis D’Arrigo Girl
Scout Leadership Center</i>. To prepare for the renovation, starting
tomorrow August 28-29, the Castroville staff will be relocated to an office in
the Castroville Station shopping center which is located on the same street,
next to the Highway 156 interchange. The temporary office is located upstairs
with elevator access and will be open to members beginning August 30. Office
phone numbers and emails will remain the same. We are so grateful for the
D’Arrigo family and all supporters for this impending transformation. We’ll
keep you posted on the progress! </div>

Caramel Chocolate Chip, will join the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie® season

More than just delicious cookies, the Girl Scout Cookie Program®

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The largest girl-led
entrepreneurial program in the world, the Girl Scout Cookie Program is proven
to help the majority of girl participants develop five essential life and
business skills, fostering the next generation of women who are entrepreneurs
and business leaders. <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">A recent <span class="MsoHyperlink"><a href="https://www.girlscouts.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gsusa/forms-and-documents/cookie/GSUSA_2016-Cookie-Skills-Fact-Sheet.pdf">Girl

surveyed learned how to set goals and meet deadlines, 88 percent became
effective decision-makers, 88 percent learned to manage money, 85 percent
gained people skills, and 94 percent learned business ethics—all through the
Girl Scout Cookie Program. Two out of three girls surveyed (66 percent)
developed all five skills while doing amazing things for themselves and their
communities. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">April is National Volunteer Month! Celebrate your favorite Girl Scout volunteers with these thoughtful ideas! Whether you choose to do one activity or all, you’re sure to make the volunteers in your life feel loved and appreciated and remember all the reasons why they continue to give their time and hearts to the Girl Scout mission. <span style="font-size: small;"><br />
<br />
<b>1. Send a personalized ecard! </b>Who doesn’t love a fun ecard?
This month, show the Girl Scout volunteer in your life—your Girl Scout
VIP!—just how much they mean to you by choosing from one of four awesome
predesigned ecard templates. Just fill in the blank to finish the
sentence (keep it short and sweet, please!) and share your ecard with
them on Facebook, on Twitter, or by email—SWEET! <a href="http://www.girlscouts.org/ShareThanks">Get started</a>. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Shout them out on social media! </b>What better way to make
your favorite Girl Scout volunteer feel special than to shout ‘em out
for the world to know? They’re the best, and you’re proud to say it loud
and clear: I love my Girl Scout volunteer! <br />
<br />
During National Volunteer Week (April 15–21), head on over to your
favorite social media pages and share why this volunteer (or
volunteers!) is so special to you. Make sure to tag @girlscouts and
include the hashtag #NVW2018 so we can follow the love.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>3. Write them a handwritten letter! </b>That’s right. Imagine
their surprise when they open their mailbox and find an old-school
letter from you. Need a little inspiration? Here are a few things you
could include:</span></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Why your favorite Girl Scout volunteer is so special</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An especially memorable time when you were happy to have their guidance and support</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How they have made a difference in your life</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Your three favorite things about them </span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<b> </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>4. Buy them something special from the Girl Scout Shop!</b> Shop our online store, GSCCC's <a href="http://www.girlscoutshop.com/CALIFORNIAS-CENTRAL-COAST-COUNCIL" target="_blank">Girl Scout Shop</a>,
and bring a smile to a volunteer’s face with a fun little token of your
appreciation. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />
Know someone who isn’t a Girl Scout volunteer but would make a great
one? Use one (or more!) of these thoughtful appreciation ideas to let
them know <a href="http://www.girlscouts.org/volunteer" target="_blank">how they could make a lasting difference in girls’ lives today</a>!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are so many ways to stand up and make your voice heard so you express the values you care about in your community. Every day, Girl Scouts are fearlessly taking civic action to make the world a better place. <br /><br />Want to make a difference? Here are five ideas: <br /><br />1. <b>Get educated.</b> Go to a town or city council meeting to find out what kinds of things people are unhappy about. You might learn about a local issue that sparks your interest and inspires you to make change. Go for it! <br /><br />2. <b>Organize.</b> Mobilize communities to donate, volunteer, or advocate for causes important to you. <br /><br />3.<b> Disrupt.</b> There’s no need to accept the status quo. Stand up against everyday injustices, challenge unfair policies, and champion causes you believe in. Taking part in letter-writing campaigns and creating petitions that call for change are great ways to get involved. <br /><br />4. <b>Speak out.</b> Call, write, or meet with public officials and community leaders to educate them about important issues. <br /><br />5. <b>Get in the race.</b> If you’re a girl, run for student council. If you’re a woman, lead by example and consider running for elected office.<br /><br />The G.I.R.L. Agenda Powered by Girl Scouts is a nonpartisan initiative to inspire, prepare, and mobilize girls and those who care about them to lead positive change through civic action.
