GSCCC Receives Grant from the Amgen Foundation for Imagine Your STEM Future Program

Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast has received a $15,000 grant from the Amgen Foundation to launch the 2017 Imagine Your STEM Future program, which will provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities to approximately 325 low-income girls, ages 5-18 in Ventura County. The Amgen Foundation seeks to advance excellence in science education to inspire the next generation of innovators, and invest in strengthening communities where Amgen staff members live and work.

The goal of the Imagine program is to expand girls’ STEM skills as they enjoy hands-on experiments, explore STEM careers, and care for their environment with the help of a strong network of volunteers.

Whether girls want to learn how to build a robot, a catapult, or participate in global conservation efforts, Girl Scout programs helps them imagine their STEM future with help from grantors such as the Amgen Foundation.

The winning Girls’ Choice badge topic is in!

from GSUSA.

Girls have spoken! The winning Girls’ Choice badge topic for 2017 is in. So, without further ado, we’re pleased to announce . . .

The next Girls’ Choice badge will be Troop Camping! What a great way to build go-get-‘em problem-solvers, encourage challenge-seeking, and expose girls to new experiences as they grow their skills, confidence, and character. After all, camp life is the best life!

Many thanks to everyone who voted and shared the poll with girls. That’s how we keep this process girl-led, which is so important!

We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and get started on these badges. Daisies will get a first taste of the camping fun and excitement in their first-ever Girls’ Choice badge, and then the Brownie Ambassador badges will build on that foundation.

Badge requirements will be available for download on June 15, 2017; badges and printed requirements will be in council shops by August. Keep an eye out for the badge design poll, which will be open from February 13 to 17. We will share that link in February.

In the meantime, start thinking about where this adventure will take you: Troop Camping awaits!

And girls, always remember, it’s your world.

How Do You S'more?

S'mores has been a long held tradition in the U.S., whose popularity has widely grown all over the world. In fact, we now celebrate a
National S'mores Day annually on August 10!

S'mores is the shortened version for "Some More" -- as in, "Can I have S'more, please?"

This tasty treat was popular with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in the 1920's. In 1927, a recipe for "Some More" was published in "Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts." Since then it has been a time honored tradition with Girl Scouts, leading up to the
Girl Scout S'mores™ cookies, available for the first time this year as part of the new Girl Scout cookie line up!

S'mores are traditionally made by roasting marshmallows over a camp fire until golden brown, then sandwiching the gooey treat between two pieces of graham cracker, after adding a block of tasty chocolate of course! A tasty treat on a cold, outdoor evening of camping. Today, there are many different ways to make this popular treat.

Girl Scouts S'mores cookies are one variation of this yummy goody. We've updated the modern S'mores snack with our own twist! We took a crispy graham cookie and double-dipped it with a yummy creme icing and a scrumptious chocolatey coating so you get all the flavor of this fireside favorite without the sticky mess. Made with real cocoa, this new cookie, is vegan, and free of artificial colors and preservatives.

So . . . How do YOU S'more?!

Cookie Season starts on February 4. You can find a Cookie Booth near YOU, here!
