Time Magazine Article Profiles Girl Scouts Legacy

GSUSA shares a wonderful article about Girl Scouts which was published in TIME magazine’s special edition about the March on Washington.

The story, sponsored by AT&T and Geico, charts our long and proud legacy of diversity and inclusion and notes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s statement that Girl Scouts was a “force for desegregation.” The PDF of the article is available on our Web site here. TIME also hosted a roundtable discussion in Washington, D.C., that included Anna Maria Chávez, Chief Executive Officer of GSUSA, Lydia Soto-Harmon, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, and a number of others. The video of some of the discussion is available here.

In addition, Anna has written a column for the Huffington Post, which also focuses on Girl Scouting and our commitment to diversity. “We have come a long way since Dr. King's dream inspired our nation to root out racism a half a century ago,” Anna writes. “Now, as then, we still have a lot of work to do for that dream to become a reality—but we are making progress. The Girl Scouts of the USA will continue to serve as a force for equality and diversity, as we develop strong female leaders who will make our world a better, more united and more inclusive place.” You can read the column online.

GSCCC Receives Irvine Fund Grant for South Monterey County Girls

Castroville, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2013

Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast announced today receipt of a $20,000 grant award from the Lauralie and J. Irvine Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County to provide Girl Scout outreach programming in Bradley, San Ardo, San Lucas, King City, Jolon, Greenfield, Soledad, Gonzales, and Chualar.

"I can't wait to..!" is a leading emotion girls experience when they are anticipating their next adventure according to a recent Girl Scout research study," said Gina Jaeger, CEO of Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast. "And, we know the feeling - we can't wait to serve girls in South County with the fun and enrichment Girl Scouting can provide through this generous contribution from The Lauralie and J. Irvine Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County." A top concern for area agencies, the region is underserved for programs that help girls with personal development and provide constructive use of time outside of the school environment. "With this funding, Girl Scouts will be able to offer a variety of programs for girls, ages 5 through 15, in neighborhoods close to home. And, if history repeats itself, as it has for over 100 years, South County girls will most fondly remember their Girl Scout experience as having a very positive life-long impact," continued Jaeger.

Known as the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls in South County will have the opportunity to participate in afterschool programs that emphasize critical thinking, teamwork, community involvement, personal development, healthy living habits, and more. Girl Scouts will work in partnership with local youth-oriented organizations and anticipates reaching 500 girls in a series of community collaborations, soccer, gardening, storytelling and writing, computer literacy and career exploration activities all designed to help girls build self-confidence and become leaders in their own lives. For more information, contact: Camille Jaque, VP Membership, cjaque@girlscoutsccc.org

Message from GSUSA regarding Oklahoma City Girl Scouts

A message from Anna Maria Chavez

I stand with all Girl Scouts across the country and around the world in offering my thoughts and prayers to all of those who have been affected by the massive and devastating tornado that tore through the Oklahoma City area on Monday. As Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin said, it was a tragic day for the people of her state and, indeed, for all of us, as the death toll now stands at 24 and includes a Girl Scout, who was a member of the Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma Council.

All staff members of the Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma Council, which is based in Oklahoma City, are accounted for and safe. The council appreciates all of the good wishes, but is unable to handle all of the calls and emails at this time. We ask that you not call or email the council, but instead check its website or Facebook and Twitter feeds for the latest information. The council also cannot accommodate material donations, such as blankets and other goods. Instead, the council has created the Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma Tornado Relief Fund that will help get troops back up and running, provide scholarships for program and camp participation, and offer other support to Girl Scouts in the affected areas. You can text the word GIRLS to 20222 to make a $10 donation. In addition, the council is encouraging girls to send messages or art in the shape of the Girl Scout trefoil that it will present this summer to Girl Scouts affected by the storm. Send your trefoil artwork to:

Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma
Mary Nichols' Family Leadership Center
6100 N. Robinson Ave.
Oklahoma City, Okla. 73118

I want to thank everyone for their thoughtful messages of caring and concern for our sisters at the Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma Council. Even as we grieve for our sister Girl Scout and all those who lost their lives, we are sustained by the resilience of the human spirit and the knowledge that the people of Oklahoma will, in time, recover and rebuild. We have endured in the past year a number of terrible and tragic events, and throughout it all, Girl Scouts have shown remarkable courage, commitment, and leadership. I know that our girls and adult volunteers will do so again in the wake of this tragedy.

Sincerely,

Anna Maria Chávez

Leaders behind the Leaders

Letter from the CEO sent to Editors:

101 years ago an amazing woman named Juliette Gordon Low started something that continues to serve this great country today. Girl Scouts has helped to shape women like Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Kathy Ireland, Katie Couric and Col. Nina Armagno, Vandenberg Air Force Base Commander.

In fact, there are over 55,000,000 Girl Scout Alumnae - girls who have grown into women who change the world in big and small ways on a daily basis.

On April 22, Girl Scouts honors the "Leaders behind the Leaders," the millions of volunteers who have guided generations of girls to become women of Courage, Confidence, and Character, who make the world a better place for all of us.

Each year the 6,000 adult members of Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast donate time and talent worth $1MM or more - helping girls to learn and live a timeless Promise.
  • San Benito County: 97 Adults - 229 Girls
  • Santa Cruz County: 573 Adults - 856 Girls
  • Monterey County: 636 Adults - 1,727 Girls
  • San Luis Obispo County: 594 Adults - 1,199 Girls

From GSUSA: Martin Luther King Day Special to Girl Scouts

On Monday, January 21, our nation will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Since its establishment as a national holiday, Girl Scouts across America have honored Dr. King's legacy by taking part in community service projects that range from serving food at homeless shelters to preparing care packages for our troops overseas.

The countless hours Girl Scouts have given over the years are a wonderful and fitting tribute to a man who changed the course of history, calling on each of us to do our part to make the world a better place. Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and challenged us to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence and service to others in our daily lives. Our girls live that ideal each and every day, by working locally to build a better world from the ground up. Thousands upon thousands of Girl Scouts will use their day off from school to serve others in communities, from Philadelphia to San Francisco and Minneapolis to Atlanta.

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Birmingham, Alabama, where Dr. King penned his historic “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and where young children, girls and boys alike, stood on the front lines of the civil rights movement to defend the right of equal treatment regardless of race or gender. It was an incredibly powerful moment; I got to walk in the footsteps of history and reflect on the sacrifices made by everyday people across this nation to bring about a more equal society.

We as Girl Scouts have special reason to rejoice on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: in 1956, amid the struggle for civil rights, Dr. King described GSUSA as a “force for desegregation.” We cherish our history of inclusion, and today diversity remains a bedrock principle of our Girl Scout Movement.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday and hope you will honor Dr. King's memory by serving others and by continuing the pivotal work that we are privileged to engage in: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Sincerely,
Anna Maria Chávez
